I don't like wearing loose fitting pyjama pants. I know, I know- comfy soft flannel PJs can be warm and look super cute, but there's nothing that annoys me more than waking up with my pants gathered up around my knees. My favourite sleep wear from the waist down are what I call pyjama leggings- super soft, lightweight, and stretchy leggings with a slightly more relaxed fit. Now, since I'm super fussy about the style, I always make my own.

If you don't want to make your own, I've found similar style pyjama pants on zando.co.za- you can find the links at the bottom of this post!
You will need:
2m of stretch knit, preferably cotton, fabric. You really want something with two way stretch for this one- and I always check that it won't go see through when I bend over. You can find great stretch cottons at Union Rag Fabric Emporium in Wynberg- and the prices are super affordable.

2cm wide elastic for the waistband
1) Measure and cut your pattern, using a pair of leggings or gym pants you already own as a starting point. I usually make my patterns on newspaper. You will need the following pieces:
-Two leg pieces
-One strip of fabric for your waistband, about 2cm longer than your waist circumference, and twice the width of your piece of elastic

2) Cut your fabric from your pattern pieces, remembering to leave a seam allowance. I normally leave about 1.5cm all around.
3) Place the two pants pieces on top of each other, right sides together. Pin the front and back of each, and sew up using a straight stitch. You can also use an overlocker if you're lucky enough to have one. If not, you can finish off the seam using a zigzag stitch (or leave it if it's stretch jersey- it won't unravel!)
4) Open up the pants so that your sewn front and back line up with each other, right sides together. Sew up your pant legs from ankle to crotch and down the other leg. Trim and finish off your seam.
5) Fold the waist band piece in half length-ways and sew the short end together, forming a loop.
6) Pin the waist band piece along the top of your pants, right sides together. Lay the elastic flat against the waist band piece, close to the top, fold the waist piece over, and pin the folded piece down onto the lower piece and the pants. Sew up with a straight stitch and finish the raw seam (if you want to)
6) Hem the ankles of your pants- I like mine to just graze my ankles, long enough that I can tuck them into my socks in winter, but not too long that they are in my way in summer.
And that's it! Your own super cosy pyjama leggings in your own favourite colour. I can't stop making these in different colours- you can never have too many comfy pants!
